What Is a Branded Title?

A branded title is a title designation showing that a vehicle had a significant event in its history.

That event may include:

1. Hail damage
2. Collision damage
3. Flood or water exposure
4. Theft recovery
5. Manufacturer buyback or similar title event

In many cases, the vehicle is later repaired, inspected, and returned to the road with a branded designation such as rebuilt, prior salvage, or reconstructed, depending on the state.

Types of Branded Titles

Title terminology can vary by state, but these are some of the most common terms buyers may see:

Clean Title - A clean title means the vehicle does not currently carry a salvage or rebuilt brand on its title.

Salvage Title - A salvage title usually means the vehicle was declared a total loss by an insurance company and is not yet ready for normal road use until properly repaired and inspected.

Rebuilt Title - A rebuilt title generally means the vehicle was previously salvage, then repaired and inspected for road use.

Reconstructed Title - A reconstructed title is similar to a rebuilt designation and is used in some states.

Manufacturer Buyback - A manufacturer buyback generally refers to a vehicle repurchased under lemon-law or warranty-related circumstances.

Common Reasons for a Branded Title

The title tells you that something happened. The reason explains what actually happened.

Hail Damage - Small dings and cosmetic damage from hail storms can sometimes result in a total-loss insurance decision, even when the vehicle remains mechanically sound.

Collision Damage - Some vehicles receive a branded title after an accident. The extent of the damage can vary from vehicle to vehicle.

Flood / Water Recovery - Water exposure can range from minor to more significant events. These vehicles should always be evaluated carefully.

Theft Recovery - Recovered theft vehicles may have anything from minimal damage to missing or damaged interior components.
